New York Harbor

On Sunday, I attended a rally and march that began at Battery Park. We were protesting Trump’s executive order banning anyone entering the US from seven Muslim countries and banning all new refugees. While I stood in Battery Park, I couldn’t help but think of the Statue of Liberty, out of sight somewhere ahead of us in New York Harbor. Which, of course, got me thinking of some of the lines from Hamilton…

And thus, I found myself rewriting the lyrics to the first part of “Right-Hand Man”*:

Lady Liberty lifts her torch on the water

Over ten thousand stand at New York Harbor

*

Gathered in Battery Park at New York Harbor

When they prepare to march!

They prepare to march!

When they prepare to march!

*

Saw a mess from the president’s executive order

He tried to close the border

We knew that we were gonna have to—

*

Rise up!

*

So we started walking

We were praying with our feet, let our numbers do the talking, we—

*

Rise up!

*

And united we stand

As we shout out our demands

Stop the wall and stop the ban, we can—

*

Rise up!

*

Understand? Come together and we’ll—

*

Rise up! Rise up!

*

Here we come!

*

We are America!

*

No ban, and no registry

*

We are America!

*

Let’s banish white supremacy

*

We are America!

*

All immigrants are welcome here

*

We are America!

*

So watch out Trump!

*

We say no ban

No wall

Our country’s

For all

So Congress better hear our call

Cause it’s time to impeach and make Trump fall

*Please note: Where there were two sets of voices overlapping, I cut the second set of voices. Also, I wrote this with the actual lyrics in front of me. I got them from here.
